Around 1,500 whales are hunted and killed each year, but not all of them are for food. Some are hunted for sport, oil and other byproducts, and for scientific research. There is a ban on commercial whale hunting, but some communities like the Inuits are given special permission to hunt whales for food, and other countries like Japan do it under the guise of scientific research. So, I would say that a large number of the 1,500 whales end up as food eventually.
