How many volts is a static electricity shock?

A person can collect anywhere from 20,000 to 25,000 volts onto his body when walking on carpet, amassing large amounts of electrons at a time. When the electrons are discharged from his body when he touches, say, a positively-charged metal banister, the resulting static shock can contain any number of voltage stored in his body at the time.
