Lightning occurs when a cloud becomes charged and induces a charge in the earth as a result. This causes some of the molecules in the air between them to ionize, and when the ionization reaches the cloud, it forms a path that electricity can follow, in order to deionize the air. The voltage of a lightning strike varies with respect to the distance between the cloud and the earth and how “thick” the path of ionized air is between them.
It varies from 10 to 120 million volts.
