The number has been steadily increasing. From 1990 to 2006 the number of visitors per year grew by 250% from 40,000 tourists in 1990 to 145,000 in 2006. The average now is up to 170,000 per year. The problem is the small island’s ecology can’t accommodate so many people so unless some regulations are put in the place the very reasons people go to visit is might be lost.
The number of visitors to the Galapagos Islands has increased tenfold since 1980. A popular destination because of its beauty and natural resources, many people are making the trip out to the Islands. In 2010, there were a total of 173,296 (combined foreign (111,722) and domestic (61,574)) travelers to the Galapagos. In 1980 there were only 17,445. Total!
Just as a side note, August is the most traveled month (most number of tourists) and September is the least traveled. February and December have average number of visitors.
