All corals are poisonous to some degree, which allows them to trap their prey. In most corals these toxins are not strong enough to harm humans (although scratches left by coral can cause problems if a small part of the coral breaks off beneath the skin), but in the case of fire corals the toxins are strong enough to pose a serious risk to humans. There are five species of fire corals.
