There are two types of plankton, phytoplankton (plants) and zooplankton (animals). Scientists have so far identified thousands of species of phytoplankton but hesitate to give a firm number as new types are constantly being discovered. I couldn’t find an exact number for zooplankton species, either, but a number of websites referred to there being over 1000 different types of major zooplankton categories (ciliates, rotifers, etc.), so zooplankton species must number in the thousands, as well.
