There are approximately 40 types of dolphins, most of them in the Delphinidae family.
There are almost 40 species of dolphin in 17 genera. They all vary in size from 1.2 meters and 40 kilograms up to 9.5 meters and 10 tons. The family Delphinidae is the largest in the Cetacean order. The are the most diverse of the cetacean families with numerous variations between species. Some examples of dolphins in this family are the pygmy killer whale, the pacific humpback dolphin and the rough toothed dolphin.
Dolphins are among the most intelligent animals and their often friendly appearance and seemingly playful attitude have made them popular in human culture.
