How many trees do we kill yearly?

There isn’t great data on this question (a lot of countries don’t bother to keep any data on deforestation), but the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN FAO), did produce a report on the state of the world’s forests in 2007 which is enlightening. According to one UN report, tree density worldwide decreased by 60,000 square kilometers in 2005. Because tree density varies between 50,000 and 100,000 trees per square kilometer, this means roughly 3 to 6 billion trees per year.
