Controversy in the city of Boston has led to a lawsuit filed by taxi drivers against a measure that will require 1,825 taxis to be replaced by hybrids by the year 2015. The taxi companies are objecting on the grounds that the expenses of purchasing new hybrid vehicles could have catastrophic economic consequences to their business. New York has a very similar situation (Mayor Bloomberg tried to demand all taxis in the city go hybrid by 2012). Other cities have had less resistance to the shift. Fourteen percent of taxis in San Francisco are now hybrids, for example. It’s also reported that a cab company in the city of Denver Colorado has a fleet consisting of ten percent Toyota Prius’s.
