It is actually not known how many times the bridge has been painted, because it is constantly being repainted. Because of the exposure to salty air and fog, the paint is easily diminished and also makes the hours available to paint slim. The bridge also has to constantly be painted due to the age of the bridge and the corrosion that comes along with it. Every year, along with routine touch ups, there are projects planned to keep the bridges color and strength where it needs to be. In 2012, the two massive main cables are being painted as well as the Marin, the north approach viaduct structures.
