This is a little like saying how many times does a kid crash before they learn to ride a bike. It is hard to say, and may depend on species, where the nest is built or even the wind speed on the particular day they try to fly. It does appear that, for birds that can fly, it is an instinct, but there is some practice that must be done. The good thing is, much like a child learning to ride the bike, a parent will be there to pick them up and give them the courage to try again.
