Though scientists believe there may have been many different seas that covered North America, scientists only have concrete proof of one, the Mexican Sea, which covered Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas and Mexico during the Jurassic and early Cretaceous periods. Fossil evidence proves that a shallow sea once spanned across the heartland of the US, dividing the eastern half from the western half like some sort of pre-historic Mississippi river-sea hybrid.
