Mount St. Helens has erupted twice in recent history (since 1980). Previous geologic history is divided into periods.
Mount St. Helens is estimated to be about 37,000 years old, “young” in volcanologist terms. In the past 4,000 years it has been very active, erupting on average about once every on hundred years. The last time it erupted was in 1980 after a 130 year gap, so it should be another seventy years or so before we start seeing new activity!
