In 1990, there was an estimated 100,000 tigers. Currently the wild tiger population has dropped to 3,200 (nearly 97%).

At their peak (and when humans were able to track such things), it’s said that over 100,000 tigers roamed the earth. These numbers aren’t pinned to an exact time, but the general consensus is the turn of the 20th century or the 1920s.
