How many termites may actually live in a termite hill?

Well, that really depends on the size of the termite hill, or mound. Some mounds in tropical savannas can reach up to 30 feet high! There is a single king and queen, who have their own chambers in the mound, and then chambers below can hold millions of larvae. One source I looked at estimates that there can be anywhere from a few hundred termites in a mound to over 3 million (the latter being in extreme cases, generally not found in the United States)
