How many states have wild buffalo?

Considering that wild buffalo almost became extinct, not many states are home to wild buffalo.  At one point in time, only 23 wild buffalo remained in the United States.  Currently, over 3,000 wild buffalo can be found in Yellowstone National Park, Montana.  Another 1,500 can be found in South Dakota.  Most of these “wild buffalo” are not really wild, considering that they were mated with ranch buffalo in order to save the species.
