If being truly green is taken to mean being truly sustainable, then no state in the country can claim this honor quite yet. One of the most important indicators of complete sustainability would be that a state makes no significant contribution to global warming, and generates all of its energy needs from non-fossil fuel sources. Yet today, all states in the nation generate at least some of their energy from fossil fuels like coal, and almost all states are home to at least one highly polluting coal plant used for energy generation. Many states have ambitious plans to greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ramp up investments in renewable energy, but these ambitions are going to take time to implement. At present, the race is still on to see what state in the country will be the first to become truly sustainable.
