    There are 7 stars in the Big Dipper. Alkaid, Mizar, Alioth, Megrez, Phecda, Merak and Dubhe.

    The big dipper is also known as Ursa Major.  Here is a photograph of the constellation and its seven stars:


    Ursa Major also gives way to the direction of the North Star.  The location of the North Star (Polaris) is underneath the big dipper, which allows it to be found easily; just look for the dipper trying to scoop it up!
