There is no specific number of stars needed to make a constellation; and configuration of stars that seems to make a pattern to human eyes will do. The minimum number of stars needed is probably two, since you cannot make a pattern with only one star. Though most constellations have many more stars than that, Canis Minor (the Little Dog) does indeed have only two easily-visible stars. Of course, a constellation with more stars that form a distinctive shape in the sky will be much easier to spot and recognize.
