It is estimated that we can only see about 8000 stars with the naked eye on Earth. Only 4000 stars are visible from the Northern Hemisphere, and 4000 are visible from the Southern Hemisphere. Only 2000 stars can be viewed from either hemisphere at any time. We can only see stars that are within 50 light years of Earth, otherwise the stars are not bright enough to see. We can not see stars outside the milky way galaxy with the naked eye.
On a really clear night, only a few thousand can be seen out of the estimated 10 billion stars in the Milky Way.
