How many square feet of solar panels do you need for a home?

That depends on how much energy you want to generate. A standard solar panel layout on a house can range from about twenty square feet (two smaller panels at about 3 x 3 feet each) to well over fifty square feet (5 x 10). If you are considering installing them at your own home, consider the direction that your roof faces— you need not only to have a large enough surface area, you also need them to be able to face the direct sunlight (south facing is optimal).
