How many square feet does a human need to live in a home?

Humans are surprisingly resilient. In developing countries, some humans live in tents, yurts, huts, or even caves, with barely enough square feet of space to lie down to sleep on the ground. Even in America, some people are able to tolerate very small living quarters. A college dorm room, for example, is rarely larger than 8’x6′ per occupant.
