How many species of trout are there?

    According to Wikipedia, it looks like ther are 21 recognized and recorded species, 1 extinct species – the Silver trout, and many sub-species as well as some not formally named  species.  These are all divided into three of the seven genera in the subfamily slamoninae.

    There are nine basic species of trout: Brown, Brook, Cutthroat, Rainbow, Dolly Varden, Tiger, Lake, Golden, and Splake.  Each species also contains subspecies that have adapted to different environments.
