The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) Red List of Threatened Species lists five different penguins as endangered species:

    1. Northern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes moseleyi)

    2. Erect-crested Penguin (Eudyptes sclateri)

    3. Yellow-eyed Penguin (Megadyptes antipodes)

    4. African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus)

    5. Galapagos Penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus)

Six more species of penguin are on the list as “vulnerable” species, and two more are “near threatened.”
