There are over 26,800 known jawed species of fish. Of these the vast majority are Osteichthyes, the bony fish, although there are around 800 in the class Chondrichthyes, cartilagenous fish like sharks. There are likely many more that we haven’t discovered yet. The jawless fish, on the other hand, make up only about 75 species, including lampreys and hagfish.
