How many species that have thought to have been extinct have been found to still be alive?

There is no data on the total number of species that were falsely thought to be extinct. These are sometimes called “Lazarus species” after the biblical story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. It’s sometimes hard to know for sure if a species is extinct, especially if its habitat is in a remote area.

Occasionally scientists will discover species thought have been extinct for millions of years. In 1938, some fisherman caught a coelacanth, a species thought to have died out at the end of the cretaceous period.

Wikipedia has a list of some rediscovered species here:

The black footed ferret was originally thought to be extinct in the wild. Over the last several years, it has been found that they still exist in the wild, and many have been reintroduced into areas that they previously lived. They are still considered highlhy endanged, but many organizations are working to protect their habitat.
