The term “Crab” has a colloquial reference that extends beyond the actual biological reference. Technically speaking, crabs are of the infraorder Brachyura, which contains 6,793 species. (http://www.kidskonnect.com/subject-index/13-animals/24-crabs.html) However, this does not count horseshoe crabs, king crabs, hermit crabs, and others that are commonly called crabs, yet are not biologically defined as crabs.
