Coral is extremely diverse; there are over 4000 different species of coral. One coral reef can have up to sixty different species of coral in it.
Coral reefs are not only extremely diverse themselves, but promote diversity in the ocean by being the home to 1/4 of marine beings. Over 9 million different species call coral reefs their homes.
Note that the 9 million species number is an estimate and is much more than the total number of known species on earth. From the Stanford page: “35 000 to 60 000 reef dwelling species have been described, but between 1 to 9 million species are estimated live on coral reefs.”
