The Great Sand Dunes National Park is actually one of the most biologically diverse National Parks in the United States. It has 8 different life zones including sabkha, sand sheet, dunefield, piƱon-juniper woodland, montane forest, subalpine, alpine, and water. Because of the high water table the dunes are actually quite moist. It contains 7 endemic insect species. I counted around 247 different species of bird. There are also 78 different species of mammals, amphibians, reptiles and fish.
