Most agree there are three main types of bear found in the Americas; the brown bear, the black bear, and the polar bear. Polar bears inhabit the icy regions of the arctic. Black bears are more common in the American Northeast, but also populate the entire continent from California to Florida. Brown Bears are found primarily in the Northwest along with their cousins the Kodiak and Grizzly bears. Although there are a number of sub-species like the Kodiak, all bears fall into these three main groups. Additionally, recent study has found that polar bears and brown bears may be mating to produce hybrid bears that are bigger and more aggressive than their relatives.
