There are four main groups of baleen whales species: blue whales, humpback whales, gray whales, and right whales. These are all considered to be the ‘great whales’ due to their immense size, for they are some of the largest living things on the planet. Baleen is a stuff bristly material that lines the upper jaw, and is used to filter food for the whale from the water. This food can include krill, plankton, and even some small species of fish. They are generally larger than toothed whales, and do not necessarily hunt for their food so much as swim with their mouths open.
