The number is probably somewhere between 3 and 30 million. The vagueness of that figure is because there are certain problems with figuring it out: humans are biased towards certai kinds of species and are more likely to study them than other kinds of species, animals in certain habitats are hard to find or study (think deep ocean), some animals are very small and easy to overlook, and somewhat ambiguous termiology can cause a group of animals to be reclassified as either a species or not one.
