Under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, it became illegal to destroy the habitat or encroach within 300 yards of an established habitat, nest, feeding ground, etc. One of the main geniuses of the legislation was it made the ecosystem of any endangered species protected under federal law, so essentially, every endangered animal lives on its own little area of federally protected land.
