Two types of alligator exist in the world: The American alligator and the Chinese alligator. Alligators belong to the Crocodilia family, which includes crocodiles, caimans, and gharials.
Worldwide there are twenty-three species of crocodilians. Many have become endangered, such as the Chinese alligator. Luckily, since the 1970s sixteen of the twenty-three species have increased in population size.
