According to the USDA, there were 1,955,799 small family farms in the U.S. in 2007. The USDA defines small farms as farms that gross less than $250,000 a year.
The number of small, family-owned farms has decreased significantly because large companies have purchased or rented their land. One way you can help local farmers is “hire” them to grow food for you. Offer to purchase your vegetables from them to help the environment by reducing shipping (and yourself by guaranteeing fresh foods) and supporting the farmer.
