Silverback gorillas are actually not their own species. They are the males of the gorilla population. Gorillas are split into two species, the eastern gorilla and the western gorilla each with two subspecies. The eastern is endangered and the western is critically endangered according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is believed that there are currently about 100,000 western lowland gorillas remaining in the wild. About 4,000 eastern lowland gorillas exist and the mountain gorillas population is down to a population of about 620 individuals in the wild.
