The Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics reports that the total number of federal, state, and private prisons in the United States during the year 2000 was 1,668. In 1995, the number was 1,464. In 2005, the total was up to 1,821, with the biggest jump in private prisons. This information is collected by the Department of Justice through the Census of State and Federal Correctional Facilities.
According to this website, the combined number of prisons (not counting jails) in the United States (with the exception of the state of Texas, which does not release the number of prisons [state or private] it operates) is roughly 1258.
