Non-organic Cotton is considered a very dirty crop because of its extremely high use of pesticides. Cotton crops are responsible for 16% of world wide pesticide use and only covers 2.5% of the worlds cultivated lands. It takes 1/3 of a pound of pesticides to produce 1 pound of cotton, which is approximately the amount used in a single t-shirt.  According to the USDA over 50 million punds of pesticides are used on cotton crops in the US over a year’s time.
