There are currently more than 600 active coal plants in use the United States. Every state in the country derives some portion of its electricity from coal-fired power plants, and many industrial practices involve the burning of coal as well. Coal is the dirtiest of all fossil fuels, and the single largest contributor to global warming on both a national and international scale, so it is imperative that we begin shifting away from coal-generated energy and onto renewable fuel sources. At the link cited below, you can find out more detailed information about many US coal plants, and learn how to get involved in efforts to shut these plants down and reduce our dependence on coal power.
