Although current exact figures on pilot whale numbers are unknown, marine biologists estimate that there are approximately 200,000 short-finned pilot whales and as many as one million long-finned pilot whales in the oceans worldwide. Pilot whales are not currently considered endangered. However, the whales are still hunted in certain parts of the world, with the hunting of pilot whales in the Faroe Islands drawing particular controversy.
