It’s hard to know exactly how many people died for several reasons. Military personnel records were destroyed in the bombings; entire families died, leaving no one to report the deaths; and there were a large number of undocumented laborers in each city.
The number of people killed in the initial blast in Hiroshima was about 70,000, and 60,000 in Nagasaki. The estimated number of acute (within 2-4 months) deaths from radiation was 90,000-166,000 in Hiroshima and 60,000-80,000 in Nagasaki. Within 5 years of the blast, the long-term effects of radiation brough the death toll to 200,000 for Hiroshima and at least 70,000 for Nagasaki.
