How many people in the U.S. rely on groundwater for their drinking water?

I don’t know the exact numbers, but 98% of water for domestic purposes comes from groundwater. The bulk of the groundwater extracted actually goes to irrigation. The map linked below shows the states with higher withdrawal rates, and since most of the groundwater goes to irrigation, it is no surprise that California is one of the states with the highest rates of extraction.
