The number fluctuates from year to year, but current estimates put about 1% of the U.S. population as vegans. With just over 307 million people residing in the U.S., there are hypothetically about 3.07 million vegans. In the U.K., only about 180,000 (0.3% of the population) people are vegans.
Harris Interactive is a great website and marketing resource and collected data for the percentages of Vegetarian and Vegan Americans. 1% of the population is vegan and of that .8% have never eaten meat, dairy, eggs, or honey.
Veganism is surprisingly becoming a smart economic choice in these tough financial times. With food prices higher than ever (a Thanksgiving turkey in 2010 cost 30% more than in 2009) many people are turning to veganism or vegetarianism to save money. Its becoming much more mainstream. Even Bill Clinton maintains a mostly vegan diet!
