The United States has an extremely low fatality rate from snakebites – only 10 or fewer people die each year. In other countries, however, the rate is much, much higher. In Sri Lanka, for example, about 421,000 people are bitten by poisonous snakes each year, and of those at least 20,000 people die. In the U.S., about 7,000 or 8,000 people are bitten per year, but of those only about 1 in 500 actually die of the bite.
The number is small. Only 12 people a year die from snakebites.
