Reports say that water quality in Mexico City varies considerably between regions. Ixtapalapa has bad water quality due to dirt and toxins seeping into the water supply through leaks in poorly maintained pipes. Mexico City also suffers from a lack of available water due to leaky pipes, and water treatment plants’ inability to deal with the large amounts of wastewater from rainfall. Residents of Mexico City typically have access to little more than one hour’s worth of running water per week. A conference called Water Summit was held in 2006 to address these problems.
