As of mid-2008, the population of the United Kingdom was 61,383,000. England accounts for 84% of the UK’s population, followed by Scotland at 8%, Wales at 5% and Northern Ireland with 3% of the total population.
The UK has the third largest population in the European Union, 5th largest in the Commonwealth, and 21st largest in the world. Between 2001 and 2008, the population increased by an annual average rate of 0.5 percent. Natural population growth overtook net migration as the leading contributer to population growth in 2008, the first time since 1998. It is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with 363 people per resident per square kilometer.
