About a billion people have been born since 2000. In 1999 the world population was 6 billion and as of 2011 is estimated at 7 billion. The United States does not think the world will reach the 7 billion mark until March 12, 2012. The UN believes the total world population has exceeded 7 billion as of October 31, 2011. The world population has actually been growing continuously since the end of the Black Death around 1350, estimated to be around 370 million. During the 1950s the world population reached its highest rates of growth (estimated at 1.8% per year) and then again, for a longer time in the 1960s and 1970s, peaking at 2.2% in 1963. By 2011 the growth rate has declined to 1.1%. The world population clock (at http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/) shows a more detailed breakdown of the world population estimates, although its accuracy is obviously to be taken with a grain of salt.
