It is not really possible to say how many people, because once the electricity is generated (by burning coal or natural gas, from nuclear plants, or from renewable sources) it gets spread out all over. 10% of total electricity in the US comes from renewable sources, so one way of looking at it would be 10% of the population. But in reality, a much larger proportion gets SOME of its electricity from renewable sources.
