The United States is the third largest nation in the world with a population of 309,315,642 (http://www.census.gov/population/www/popclockus.html). Considering the formula for the impact of population on the environment (Impact)= Population size x Affluence x Technology (the measure of the impact of technology) gives an idea on how a nation is contributing to the deterioration of the Earth. Clearly the United States has an extremely large population for it’s demographic area.
“The scientific consensus is that 150-200 million is the ideal population size for the U.S. That’s about the size of the U.S. 50 years ago” (http://www.npg.org/faq.html#anchor2)
