Originally it was estimated that about 300 people died in the 8.8 magnitude quake. Later that number changed to a little over 700, and it’s estimated that the final number may be closer to 1000.
The death toll of the chilean earthquake is a highly contested figure. Initial figures were in the 200’s then reports rose sharply t just over 800. The figure then dropped back to 279. At this point, no one is sure how many deaths can actually be blamed on the quake. It seems that some presumed dead have since surfaced as alive, but there have also been concerns about the way that the government has been reporting.
